Yesterday morning I was grading homework and trying not to let my 4 hours of sleep get the best of me... I had already reprimanded my kids for not following directions (wait until AFTER I'm done grading papers to nag me about finishing your Circle Time work!!!) and the atmosphere of Yellow Class was a little on the tense side.
I called up Jasmin to get her homework and stickers when I saw her come up with a bit of trepidation. "OK, Jasmin, I'm not going to throw you out the window. Why are you so scared?" And she said, "Teacher. Blood."
Winter is a very dry time here in Korea. Students come in with cracked and bloody knuckles, peeling and scabby lips, the skin under their nose is flaky and dry. So when any of my kids say bloody I immediately point to Sophia's room where they get lotioned/Vaselined/moisturized up. I nodded my head towards the door and said, "Go." But I then followed Jasmin's eyes to the floor.
There on the white tiled floor was a small pool of blood. Pool is actually an overstatement. It was about the size of a dime (or a 50 won) but it was the unmistakable bright red of blood.
"Ewwww!" I scanned my students. "Everyone, check your nose!!" No culprit. "Everyone check your hands!" Silence.
"Who has an ouch?" I self consciously checked my own nose. Although I can say the only time I've ever had a nosebleed in my 26 years was when I went on Accutane.
"If no one is bleeding, where did this come from?"
Jack raised his hand. "Casey!! I know! Mosquito poop!"
Huh. Makes perfect sense.
